ICANN has just released the names of the 5 test companies for the new Domain registry system, as well as a list of post-test registrars. Bearing in mind that this system affects the entire internet, the names are America OnLine, France Telecom, Melbourne IT, Register.com, and CORE. More info is available from http://www.icann.net

Seb is a Jedi Master in the art of creating sites and keeping servers running. This often means hitting them repeatedly with forces that defy rational explanation, though he prefers to descibe it as "administration". When he's not practising his percussive skills on E450s and AS400s, he can be found masquerading as the senior developer for some widely varied clients. It's still not certain whether or not the meanings of CMS, CRM, and B2B have penetrated the alcoholic fog enveloping his brain, but he makes convincing noises to customers about XML, XSLT, Python, J2EE, PHP, Perl, C++, and OpenGL.

Seb has been in the web game pretty much since it began, and still has fond memories of the time when a web could be swept aside with a duster and spam was pork luncheon meat. Despite being the developer of one of the first commerce sites in Europe, he has yet to make any real money.

Being English, Seb doesn't like SOAP, but instead has recently discovered something called ZOPE. Zope is a platform that runs Plone which he thinks is the coolest thing since high-performance, real-time 3D APIs, which he often writes small games in.

Seb lives in the best little city in the world, and used to commute 5 hours a day on British trains. He is subsequently immune to all forms of torture techniques.

I had heard the names were released, but I didn't know America Online was one. In theory, *most* people registering domain names are professionals working in the Web development field, correct? Given America Online's customer service record, reputation for spamming its customers and general poor product, who in hell is going to register a domain name with them? Just a question.

AOL as a company is doing a lot of things differently lately. Their deal with Sun puts them in the server market, like it or not. I think its a good thing overall.. No more paying 70 bux for a domain name.. :)

I have plenty of faith in AOL as a company. Their deal with Microsoft has made them a big time ISP. It doesn't change the quality of their service. I'll believe it when I see it. And I'm all about not spending $70USD for a domain. Don't get me wrong.

For me at the moment, the worst thing is the fact that France Telecom are named.

A little background...

France Telecom are the government owned telco monopoly in France. They are also currently responsible for really appalling access speeds, and astronomical access charges. They are currently considering introducing per-KB upload charges (for things like http requests, etc.)

For internet users in France, France Telecom has much the same status as AOL four years ago, except that they also control the country's phone lines.

Finally, in France there's a system called MiniTel which is like BBSs, and is very popular and very expensive... and is the reason that internet uptake is slower in France than anywhere else. France Telecom get all of the revenue from MiniTel, so you can guess how eager they are to push people towards a low-cost internet.

That's extremely scary, Seb. There is nothing the Telcos in the US would love more than to have control over Internet access. Of course, they are lobbying congress now to have long distance charges levied on all ISP dial-ins. Would it be necessary to register a domain name through Freance Telecom, or does the "worldwide" status afforded register.com and AOL only apply to .com, .edu, .org and .net addresses?
