Microsoft has released Internet Explorer 5.5. This latest version sports virtually no UI changes aside from a print-preview feature. Its support for W3C standards such as HTML4 and CSS1 has improved, but is still incomplete.

IE 5.5 has some other features of interest to web developers, such as built-in support for W3C's SMIL Boston multimedia standard, element behaviors, and <frame> and <iframe> elements that support transparency and z-indexing with other content.

For further information on IE 5.5's new features, see http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/features/2000/jul00/07-12ie5.5.asp. To download the IE 5.5 setup utility, see http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.htm.

And of course the download page doesn't render in NN4 thanks to poor coding. For a company releasing a browser that claims to support standards, how can they be sure if their own site doesn't even conform to those standards?

aardvark,

The link works fine for me in Netscape Communicator 4.73 and Navigator 4.08. You might try http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ (without default.htm tacked on) to ensure that you're being served the right page for NN.

I ran the page through the W3C validator and found only "non-fatal" errors (html that doesn't conform to W3C HTML 4.01 spec -- missing alt attributes, etc.), but no structural errors that might cause NN to freak.

Has anyone else had this problem? It would be interesting to know.

Well the http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ site works for me, but when I click on the "Download Now" link and get sent to this page all I get is the standard MS banner at the top of the page. Netscape 4.72 on Linux 2.2.16 here. Exactly the same thing happens with NN 4.73 on my Win98 box too.

From a CNET.com story:
"the download page for version 5.5 came up blank for Netscape users yesterday and this morning. Microsoft has since fixed the problem."

djc, I have found that the Linux version of NN, from using it at a free Internet access kiosk in Las Vegas and comparing it to how I know the Windows version renders certain pages, has issues. More issues than the Windows version. Yes, it does seem silly, but that's just what I've noticed.

bugger - for some reason, the Royal Bank of Scotland's PC banking service doesn't support IE 5.5. yet ... God knows what the problem is!
