Netscape has now re-placed the Navigator/Mozilla download back onto its servers for public consumption. Apparently this time this is the offical preview release of the new standards-based browser. You can download the file from http://www.netscape.com/download/.

I am writing this comment with Navigator 6 for Win32. Pretty cool. For those who care, the User Agent string for my version is Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; N; Win98; en-US; m14) Netscape6/6.0b1. In the meantime, I'm trying to get a full package for the browser archive, but it uses one of those damn installer packages. If anyone has any ideas, let us know.

Just so people are aware, this is a *preview* release, and not the final product(As CNN is reporting.. *sigh* more on that later though) You can get the full install from our browser archive here.. - although only for Windows right now. More to come later..

I just installed Netscape6 on my NT 4.0 (Service Pack 3) and had no joy when I tried running it. The spash screen comes up, the hard disk rattles, then nothing. I'll report this to Netscape (plus the information that Dr. Watson is reporting). *sigh*

OK, the evolt.org browser archive now has the Mac OS 8.5 version, the win32 version, and the Linux x86 version. Been running it all day in place of NN4, so far so good, almost no problems. I think I'll keep it, if my mommy will let me.

I'm using Win2000 and downloaded the win32 version with no luck, so I had to use M14 to write this comment, but that's good enough. After installation I always get a memory error :-(

Wired doesn't have many good things to say about Netscape6Preview. Alot of MacInTouch.com readers seem to hate it too. I don't blame them. Personally, I think it's incredibly ugly. The install process was fine. The setup process was pathetic. It just looked like shit, and there were redraw issues too. The non-standard default interface is just a mind-blowingly bad decision. If they stay with it for the full release, I wouldn't be surprised if they take more crap. The top navbar of N6, as people have said in many forums, just seems to blend into the Web site you're viewing. Bleargh. Despite reports that IE5 renders faster than Gecko, Gecko seemed fast enough when I tried it out on a long slashdot comments page. Hopefully, a group will grab the gecko code, and build a nice browser around it (without stupid shopping buttons), so that we can test our sites without putting up with AOL's junk and that horrific GUI...
